OGLIASTRA “ISLAND WITHIN ISLAND”
Ogliastra new sardinian province, is situated in the zone central east of Sardinia.
It is a territory wich extends to 1854 km sq (6,2% of the sardinian territori) accounting for 23 communes, with almost 60.000 habitants (3,6% of the sardinian population ) it is the least populated province of Sardinia.
Its presence is like an anfitheatre by the sea, and this derives from the fact that it is surrounded by a series of complex mountains which slope into the sea bed around the eastern coast. This particular geographic factor has attributed the appellation of “island within island”. Its territory is famous for the splendid rocky coasts overflowing into the sea, interrupted by sandy white beaches, not to undervalue the less known inland areas which are equally beautiful with the vast Gennargentu, the limestone rocky ledges, and the age old forests.
Ogliastra, apart from its natural beauty, is rich in history. The region possesses various significant findings, such as “menhir” and the “domus de janas”. Moreover, the territory presents more than 200 monuments going back to the nuraghic civilization: nuraghi, tomb of the giants.
For those who love trekking, Ogliastra’s nature and wildlife properties would be ideal. Often its walks and pathways are not drawn out by signposts, and this requires a cautions approach. Above all for those less expert, we recommend to take along a guide. Every year the specialized guides take along thousands of explorers attracted by the landscapes and by the presence of numerous evidences going back to the nuraghic civilization.
Within a zone painted with turquoise, green and blue, Ogliastra is one of the most beautiful and natural coastal areas in all of Italy.
With its natural qualities unique in the Mediterranean , you will have the fortune to be able to enjoy an unspoilt landscape, ancient and unchanged.
